How Disney rethemed a controversial classic into a celebration of New Orleans
In short: When Disney decided to replace Splash Mountain, they weren't just changing a ride's name. They were navigating a complex history of cultural representation, transforming a controversial 1946 film's legacy into a vibrant, immersive celebration of Louisiana culture and music.
The transition from Splash Mountain to Tiana's Bayou Adventure represents a significant shift in Disney's storytelling approach. The original attraction was themed to the 1946 film Song of the South, a movie that has been rarely aired in the U.S. due to claims that it depicts African Americans via damaging stereotypes, looking satisfied with plantation existence in the post-Civil War South. While Disney originally felt the animated portions of the film left them unaffected by these issues, the company had been privately discussing removing the theme for at least five years.
Development of the new attraction began in 2019, prior to the online petitions sparked by the George Floyd protests. According to Carmen Smith, senior vice president of inclusion strategies, the global changes brought on by the pandemic and the protests influenced the decision to move forward with the new concept. The project, led by Senior Creative Producer Charita Carter, aims to create a sense of celebration rather than apprehension. This is reflected in the ride's climactic 52.5-foot drop, which designers intended to feel like a "rite of passage" into a party.
To ensure authenticity, the Imagineering team conducted research trips to Louisiana, visiting the French Market and various bayous. They consulted with academics, musicians, and chefs, and even commissioned local artist Malaika Favorite to design the queue mural. The experience is heavily grounded in New Orleans culture, featuring music by Grammy-winning musicians PJ Morton and Terence Blanchard, and utilizing 48 Audio-Animatronics figures to bring the bayou to life.
