The tragic mechanics of a world where rules are meant to be broken
In short: What if your very touch brought death to everyone you loved? In Yoshifumi Tozuka’s Undead Unluck, the protagonists navigate a reality governed by supernatural negations, fighting against cosmic entities and mysterious organizations to find a way to exist without catastrophe.
The narrative centers on Fuuko Izumo, an eighteen-year and a half-year-old girl whose life was shattered at age eight. A devastating incident involving her 'unluck' ability resulted in the deaths of over 200 people, including her own parents. This ability forces misfortune upon anyone she touches, leading her to live in self-imposed seclusion for a decade. Her path crosses with Andy, an 'undead' man possessing incredible regenerative powers and a singular, desperate desire: to experience the perfect death, a feat made impossible by his immortality.
The world of the series is governed by 'Negators'—individuals capable of negating the fundamental rules of the universe. These characters are often hunted by the Union, a mysterious organization tasked with managing 'UMA' (Unidentified Mysterious Animals). These creatures are the physical embodiments of Earth's natural laws, such as decay or thirst, and are viewed as both divine quests and punishments. The struggle is further complicated by the presence of 'Under' and 'Regulators,' beings acting on divine will, and the 'Apocalypse' book, a sentient volume that proposes missions to the Union's specialized ten-person team.
While the series achieved significant commercial success—boasting over 1.8 million copies in circulation by September 2022 and winning the sixth Next Manga Award in 2020—it has faced critical scrutiny. Some reviewers, such as those from Anime News Network and Comic Book Resources, criticized the depiction of the relationship between Andy and Fuuko, noting concerns regarding sexualized portrayations of the female lead. Despite these critiques, the franchise expanded into novels and an anime adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment and David Production, continuing to explore the mysteries of its complex, rule-breaking universe.
