Can a fictional character break free from the pages of a webtoon?
In short: In the 2016 South Korean series W, the boundaries between reality and fiction collapse. When a surgeon is pulled into her father's webtoon, she encounters the protagonist, a man whose life is dictated by the ink on the page. Their romance challenges the very nature of existence and narrative control.
W, a 16-episode series that aired on MBC in 2016, explores the collision between the real world and an alternate universe contained within a webtoon. The story follows Oh Yeon-joo, a cardiothoracic surgeon, who discovers her father, Oh Seong-moo, has lost control over his own creation. The webtoon's protagonist, Kang Cheol, is a wealthy Olympic gold medalist and media mogul who begins to exhibit a reality of his own, forcing his creator to view him as a monster to be eliminated.
The mechanism of this crossover is triggered by the webtoon's narrative and Kang Cheol's emotional state. Yeon-joo finds herself physically transported into the webtoon's world, where her ability to enter and exit is tied to Kang Cheol's feelings. As the lines blur, the series delves into the consequences of a fictional character gaining agency, leading to a complex struggle for survival against a mysterious, faceless killer who shares the author's likeness.
Directed by Jung Dae-yoon and written by Song Jae-jung, the show was a critical and commercial success, topping viewership ratings throughout its run and winning Drama of the Year at the 35th MBC Drama Awards. Its unique premise has since inspired international adaptations, including a Thai version titled Switch On, which reimagines the alternate universe as a virtual reality game, and a Malaysian remake titled W: Two Worlds.
The series remains a notable example of high-concept storytelling, blending romance with meta-fictional tension. By questioning who truly holds the pen, W examines the power dynamics between creator and creation, ultimately suggesting that once a story takes on a life of its own, it may no longer belong to the person who wrote it.
