The heavy, high-calorie feast of a 1911 Antarctic expedition

Food History: Cooking Captain Scott's Christmas Dinner at the South Pole · 7:18 · Video: Unicorn Stew · Watch at the source

In short: Experience the culinary reality of polar exploration by recreating Captain Scott's Christmas dinner. This video explores how explorers swapped their standard rations for a massive four-course feast while just a month away from reaching the South Pole.

On December 25, 1911, members of the Terra Nova expedition enjoyed one of the first festive meals ever eaten near the South Pole. The menu was designed for maximum caloric intake to combat the extreme cold, featuring a progression from pemmican and horse meat to heavy puddings.

The specific four-course supper included pemmican with horse meat flavored with onion and curry powder, an arrowroot and cocoa hoosh, a plum pudding, and a final dessert of caramels and ginger. The meal was so substantial that explorers reported feeling 'thoroughly warm' but found it difficult to move afterward.
