How to design a home and garden that survives a massive flood
In short: When 2-metre floodwaters surged through a Queenslander in 2022, the residents moved back in just one day. This resilience wasn't luck; it was the result of specific architectural choices and a strategic post-flood garden triage plan designed to combat silt, acidity, and soil instability.
Architect Sam Bowstead, whose practice focuses on flood-resilient design, implemented several key structural changes to his Wilston property to withstand severe flooding. To protect the living areas from predicted 2-metre flood levels, the entire house was raised by 1.5 metres. The ground floor was repurposed as a utility space containing only a garage and laundry, featuring polished concrete floors for easy cleaning of silt and water-resistant 'single skin' walls made of marine ply.
The impact of flooding extends beyond the structure into the landscape. After the 2022 deluge, gardener Peter managed the property's recovery through a process of triage. To ensure plants could continue photosynthesizing, he used a pressure washer to remove silt from leaves that had been submerged. To address the chemical and biological contaminants, such as sewerage, often found in floodwaters, he prioritized soil testing before any new gardening commenced.
Soil composition also undergoes significant shifts after a flood. In this case, topsoil became more sandy due to new deposits, while a layer of waterlogged, sloppy clay remained at a depth of 400mm. Because engineers classify this type of 'problem soil' as unable to hold loads, future plantings must feature non-invasive root systems to prevent large trees from toppling. To manage these risks, the gardeners are avoiding edible plants due to potential ongoing contamination and are instead opting for hardy species like the Brisbane lily, Crinum pendunculatum var asiaticum, and the Swamp Banksia.
