In short: The Chinese lacquer tree yields a milky sap that transforms into a glossy, waterproof, and near-indestructible coating. This ancient material, known as urushi, has protected Asian decorative arts for centuries. Yet, the same sap contains the potent allergen urushiol, the same compound found in poison ivy.

Toxicodendron vernicifluum, historically classified as Rhus vernicifera, is a deciduous tree native to China and Korea, with a long history of cultivation in Japan. The tree is tapped for its sap, a thick, milky emulsion that darkens and thickens upon exposure to air. This substance is a natural polymer that, when applied as a thin film, creates a finish resistant to acids, alkalis, alcohol, and heat up to 70 °C (158 °F).

The process of harvesting this material is precise. Artisans typically tap trees that are at least 10 years old by making 5 to 10 horizontal incisions in the trunk. The resulting greyish-yellow sap must be filtered and processed to remove impurities. Unlike most paints or varnishes, urushi does not dry through evaporation. Instead, it requires a warm, humid environment to cure, where the urushiol polymerizes to form a hard, clear, and durable surface.

The presence of urushiol makes the raw sap a significant skin irritant, capable of causing contact dermatitis even from its vapours. However, once the lacquer has fully cured, allergic reactions become much less common. Beyond its use in decorative arts—such as tableware, musical instruments, and jewelry—the tree has been utilized in traditional medicine and for producing Japan wax from its fruits. While the tree is related to poison ivy, its unique chemical properties have made it an essential resource for centuries of craftsmanship.
