In short: Before the 1940s, infants born with severe heart defects often faced a grim fate. Alfred Blalock changed that by pioneering a surgical shunt that rerouted blood flow, effectively ushering in the modern era of neonatal cardiac surgery and saving countless lives.

In the early 20th century, children born with tetralogy of Fallot—a condition often called 'blue baby' syndrome—suffered from a lack of oxygenated blood. This condition involves four distinct defects: pulmonary stenosis (narrowing of the valve to the pulmonary artery), a ventricular septal defect, an overriding aorta, and right ventricular hypertrophy. Because the heart cannot properly circulate oxygen, the skin takes on a characteristic bluish hue, often leading to high infant mortality.

Alfred Blalock, an American surgeon who graduated from the University of Georgia in 1918, sought to solve this crisis. Despite an 'average' academic record at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Blalock excelled in surgical courses. Working alongside pediatric cardiologist Helen B.

Taussig and laboratory assistant Vivien Thomas, he developed the Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt. This procedure created a systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt, a palliative strategy designed to relieve cyanosis by redirecting blood flow to the lungs. While the original technique was a breakthrough, it laid the groundwork for a surgical strategy that remains a fundamental option today. To treat intricate congenital heart anomalies, contemporary healthcare continues employing systemic-to-pulmonary shunts, especially for individuals possessing univentricular physiology. Despite the availability of contemporary methods such as ductal stenting, the foundational research of Blalock persists as a pillar of paediatric cardiology, converting a previously lethal condition into a treatable state where numerous individuals currently enjoy fairly ordinary existences.
