In short: Instead of pushing products, leading companies are now focusing on delivering valuable, free information. From extreme sports films to personal finance guides, the goal has shifted from direct sales to building long-term loyalty through storytelling and utility.

Content marketing is a strategic approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, free content to attract and retain a specific audience. Unlike traditional advertising, which often prioritizes immediate sales, this method aims to build brand credibility and community engagement. By identifying customer needs first, companies can provide useful formats such as white papers, podcasts, how-to guides, and newsletters to foster a willingness to purchase in the future.

The evolution of this practice is significant. While business owners applied these techniques in the late 19th century, the 1940s and 1950s 'golden age' of television saw a shift toward sales-focused advertising. The digital revolution of the 1990s changed everything, as the internet allowed for the rise of blogs and email marketing. By 201s3, social networks like YouTube and Facebook made content accessible and shareable on demand worldwide.

Today, some brands have become full-scale media entities. Red Bull, for instance, operates Red Bull Media House, producing feature films for cinema and managing an international monthly magazine. Similarly, the personal finance site Mint.com built a massive audience through its 'MintLife' blog, offering guides on debt and savings. This strategy proved highly effective: Mint grew quickly enough to be sold to Intuit for $170 million after only three years in business.

Despite its dominance—with usage in corporations jumping from 60% to 93% between 2012 and 2013—measuring success remains a challenge. While 70% of organizations are producing more content, only 21% of marketers believe they are successful at tracking their return on investment.
