In short: While many expected a permanent exodus from the city, New York's workforce is showing remarkable resilience. Despite a shrinking child population and a net loss in domestic households, the city has reached a record high employment-to-population ratio, even as the national average begins to drift downward.

New York City's economic landscape is currently defined by a striking divergence from national trends. While the U.S. employment-population ratio drifted down to 59.7 percent in September 2025, NYC reached a new record high of 58.8 percent in the same period. This growth is particularly notable because the city's resident employment levels have remained essentially unchanged since September 2019, even as the adult population declined by roughly 2 percent over that same six-year span.

This resilience is set against a backdrop of significant demographic contraction. The city's population saw a steep 5% drop in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and while the adult population has since stabilized and rebounded, the number of children under 18 has continued to fall. Currently, the proportion of children in the city is at its lowest level on record, and the total number of children is at its lowest point in many decades.

The city's migration patterns also provide a nuanced picture of its economic health. In 2024, domestic migration remained stable, with a negative balance of approximately 42,300 households. While this represents a loss of individuals, it is a much smaller deficit than the losses seen in 2021. Furthermore, the income levels of both incoming and outgoing households have remained relatively stable, suggesting that the city remains a primary hub for high-value economic activity despite the shift in its demographic makeup.
