The comic hero who mastered her own heartbeat through sheer will
In short: Mantis isn't just a superhero; she is a master of her own biology. Through extreme meditative disciplines, she gained the ability to consciously control her autonomic functions—like her heartbeat and breathing—allowing her to heal injuries and react with superhuman reflexes through the power of pure mental focus.
Mantis first appeared in 1973 as a complex character designed to challenge the maturity of her teammates. Created by Steve Englehart, she was initially conceived as a 'femme fatale' but evolved into the 'Celestial Madonna,' a figure of immense cosmic significance. Her backstory is rooted in a destiny where she was raised by the Priests of Pama to mate with a Cotati being and produce the 'Celestial Messiah,' a being destined to be the most important in the universe. Her unique physiological capabilities stem from a combination of rigorous training and cosmic communion. She was trained by the Priests of Pama as a grandmistress of martial arts, capable of sensing an opponent's weak points and knocking out beings as powerful as Thor.
Furthermore, her communion with the Prime Cotati granted her psychic empathy and the ability to project her astral form across interplanetary distances, even allowing her to inhabit plant-like simulacra of her own body. Perhaps her most profound ability is her mastery over her own anatomy. By perfecting meditational disciplines, Mantis achieved a level of self-control that allows her to manipulate her heartbeat, breathing, and even the process of bleeding. This mental dominance over her physical form enables her to accelerate healing and grants her nearly superhuman reflexes. While she also possesses telepathic and precognitive abilities, her core identity remains tied to this intense, internal mastery of the self.
Mantis's narrative is marked by significant shifts in her identity and status. She has been depicted as a member of both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Her history includes periods of being mind-wiped, working as a sex worker, and even splitting into multiple versions of herself due to psychological trauma. Despite these complexities, she remains a distinct figure in Marvel lore, recognized for her remarkable intellect and her unique, third-person manner of speech, which she maintains as a point of personal importance.
