In short: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 1,033 hospitalized adults found that combining the Janus kinase inhibitor baricitinib with remdesivir helped patients recover faster than receiving remdesivir alone. The study observed that those receiving the combination therapy had a median recovery time of 7 days, compared to 8 days for the control group. This benefit was particularly pronounced in patients requiring high-flow oxygen or noninvasive ventilation.

Researchers conducted this double-blind trial to see if targeting inflammation alongside viral replication could improve outcomes. They found that the combination therapy also showed a 30% higher odds of improved clinical status by day 15 and was associated with fewer serious adverse events and new infections compared to the control group. However, the study did not find a statistically significant difference in 28-day mortality between the two groups.

Why it matters: Combining an anti-inflammatory drug with an antiviral may help hospitalized Covid-19 patients recover more quickly.
