In short: A randomized trial of 613 adults with mild to moderate COVID-19 found that a combination of two neutralizing antibodies, bamlanivimab and etesevimab, significantly reduced the amount of virus in patients' bodies. While bamlanivimab was tested alone at three different doses, only the combination therapy showed a statistically significant decrease in viral load compared to a placebo.

The study aimed to see if these antibodies could lower the viral burden in non-hospitalized patients. Researchers measured changes in log viral load at day 11 and observed that while monotherapy did not significantly differ from the placebo, the combination treatment resulted in a notable reduction (P = .01).

The study was limited by its focus on viral load as a primary measure rather than overall clinical benefit. While it showed the antibodies could clear some virus, further trials were needed to determine if this actually improved long-term health outcomes for patients.

Why it matters: Combining specific antibodies may be more effective at clearing the virus than using a single antibody alone.
