The invisible language of life: how nature communicates through signals
In short: From the chemical warnings released by plants to the electrical pulses in your brain, signaling is the fundamental mechanism of existence. It is the process of embedding information into physical variations, allowing organisms to sense, react, and evolve in a complex, interconnected world.
Within engineering and biology, signals represent measurable fluctuations across time or space that communicate details regarding a specific event. This can manifest as actions taken by an organism to alert others—such as plants releasing chemicals to warn of predators or animals using sounds and motions to locate food. At the most fundamental level, signaling occurs even at cellular levels, where it serves as a primary driver for evolutionary development.
The distinction between types of signals is crucial for understanding how we interact with the world. Analog signals are continuous representations of physical quantities, like sound pressure or temperature, often converted by transducers (such as microphones) into electrical voltage. In contrast, digital signals represent sequences of discrete values. While analog signals are susceptible to degradation from noise—unwanted modifications or conflicting signals known as crosstalk—digital systems can maintain operation even with system noise, provided it is not too great.
Modern medical imaging leverages these principles to map the human body. High-resolution intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MRI allows researchers to characterize diffusion-perfusion properties in tissues like the parasagittal dura (PSD). By quantifying parameters such as apparent diffusion coefficients and perfusion fractions, scientists can distinguish between different fluid-transport behaviors. The PSD, for instance, shows a distinct profile compared to cerebrospinal fluid or brain parenchyma, revealing its role as a transitional interface for dural lymphatics and venous outflow.
Ultimately, signal processing is the science of recovery: separating desired information from background noise. Whether it is an electrical engineer designing user-machine interfaces or a biologist studying evolutionary communication, the goal remains the same—interpreting the variations in our environment to decode the underlying reality.
