The year a first overall pick vanished into a trade
In short: In 1990, the Dallas Cowboys held the worst record in the league but didn't own the most coveted prize. Through a complex series of maneuvers involving forfeited picks and multi-team trades, the top selection shifted hands before a single player even stepped onto the stage.
The 1990 NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting took place on April 22–23 at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. While the Dallas Cowboys technically held the first overall pick for the second year in a row due to their disastrous 1–15 record in 1989, they were unable to use it. This was because they had already forfeited that specific first-round selection by choosing quarterback Steve Walsh during the supplemental draft of the previous year.
The path of the top pick serves as a masterclass in NFL front-office maneuvering. The Atlanta Falcons originally held the rights to the first overall choice, but they traded it to the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts then exercised that trade to select quarterback Jeff George with the number one spot. This sequence highlights how league standings do not always dictate draft outcomes; administrative decisions and pre-draft trades often override on-field performance.
The draft also served as a springboard for several future legends who would eventually be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Among them were Cortez Kennedy, taken 3rd overall by the Seattle Seahawks, and Junior Seau, selected 5th overall by the San Diego Chargers. In contrast, some of the most impactful players entered the league through different doors; defensive tackle John Randle went undrafted from Texas A&M-Kingsville University, while tight end Shannon Sharpe was not selected until the 7th round.
The complexity of the 1990 draft is further evidenced by its administrative oddities. The league held a separate supplemental draft following the main event but prior to the regular season. Additionally, five selections in the 1990 draft were forfeited entirely, illustrating the high-stakes nature of roster management and the various ways teams can lose—or trade away—their primary opportunities for talent.
