How a global pandemic reshaped a Premier League title race
In short: In 2020, the footballing world ground to a halt. As COVID-19 suspended the Premier League, Manchester United navigated a season of unprecedented disruption, transitioning through leadership changes and navigating a landscape of empty stadiums to secure a top-three finish.
The 2019–20 season was a period of significant transition for Manchester United. It marked the first full campaign under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who had taken permanent charge in March 2019. The squad also faced a period of leadership evolution; following the departures of Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera, Ashley Young was appointed club captain, only to be succeeded by Harry Maguire in January 2020 after Young moved to Inter Milan.
The season was defined by the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the suspension of the Premier League on 13 March 2020, the league faced an indefinite hiatus. It was not until June 2020 that football returned behind closed doors. This hiatus interrupted what had been a competitive campaign where United had struggled to maintain consistency, at one point sitting as low as fifth place in the league table.
Despite the lack of trophies—marking the club's first hat-trick of trophyless seasons since 1989—the season contained historic milestones. Scott McTominay scored the club's 2,000th Premier League goal in a victory against Norwich City in October 2019. On the pitch, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience, recording a 14-game unbeaten streak in the league and securing a third-place finish and Champions League qualification with a 2–0 win over Leicester City on 26 July 2020.
The side enjoyed dramatic cup campaigns, progressing as far as the semi-finals in the UEFA Europa League, EFL Cup, and FA Cup. Despite the letdown of their Europa League departure, the campaign featured prolific scoring, notably when United led the Premier League as the initial club to secure four straight victories by at least three goals.
