The Kansas City Chiefs became the first team since 2004 to defend a title
In short: Defending an NFL championship is notoriously difficult, yet the Kansas City Chiefs achieved it in 2023. Despite a mid-season offensive slump that saw their scoring production crater, they navigated a grueling playoff path to secure back-to-back titles, cementing a new era of dominance for Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.
The 2023 season was defined by a stark contrast between regular-season struggles and postseason perfection. After starting 6–1, the Chiefs suffered a significant offensive decline, scoring only 39 touchdowns compared to 61 the previous year. This drop caused their league ranking to tumble from 2nd to 15th in total scoring. However, they managed to secure an 11–6 record and won their eighth consecutive division title. The team's success was largely anchored by a formidable defense that ranked 2nd in the NFL for both yardage and points per game. This defensive unit proved elite in the playoffs, holding four opponents—all of whom possessed top-10 scoring offenses—to an average of just 15.8 points per game.
This defensive backbone allowed them to survive a narrow 27–24 road win against the Buffalo Bills and a 17–10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The Chiefs secured a 25–22 overtime win against San Francisco 49ers during Super Bowl LVIII. By winning, they became the initial squad to protect a title since the 2004 New England Patriots. It also marked the first time an AFC West team had achieved this feat since the 1998 Denver Broncos. For Patrick Mahomes, it was his third Super Bowl title and MVP award in just six years as a starter.
