Can Dabo Swinney maintain Clemson's elite status in 2024?
In short: Entering his 17th year at the helm, head coach Dabo Swinney faces a pivotal season. With a recruiting class ranked tenth nationally, the Clemson Tigers are positioning themselves to reclaim dominance in the ACC and compete at the highest levels of NCAA Division I FBS football.
The 2024 Clemson Tigers football season marks a significant chapter in the program's modern era. Led by Dabo Swinney, who is now in his 17th year and 16th full season as head coach, the Tigers are competing as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The program's ability to attract top-tier talent remains a cornerstone of its strategy, evidenced by a 2024 recruiting class that secured the number two ranking within the ACC and was rated as the tenth best class overall by the 247Sports Composite. This season represents Swinney's sixteenth complete year leading the squad. The team continues its long-standing membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Beyond recruitment, the program continues to serve as a significant pipeline for professional talent. During the 2024 NFL draft, six Clemson players were selected, demonstrating the high ceiling of the university's athletic development. This professional success is vital for maintaining the program's prestige and attracting future signees to the university. The university's athletic programme consistently produces professional-grade athletes. This trend was evident when six individuals were drafted into the NFL during the 2024 cycle.
However, the landscape of collegiate football is increasingly fluid due to the transfer portal. Following the championship selections, a designated 45-day window allows players to enter the portal, creating a period of significant roster uncertainty. As the Tigers navigate the ACC, including high-stakes matchups like the ACC Championship Game against No. 8 SMU, the program must manage both its incoming talent and the departure of players seeking new opportunities. Roster management becomes particularly complex during the post-championship period. This includes navigating the specific 45-day window for transfer portal entries.
