How 44 teams fight for Italy's most prestigious domestic knockout trophy
In short: The Coppa Italia is more than just a football tournament; it is a complex, multi-stage gauntlet. From the grit of the preliminary rounds to the high-stakes semi-finals, only one team can claim the 80th edition of this historic competition.
The 2026–27 Coppa Italia, officially known for sponsorship reasons as the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa, represents the 80th edition of Italy's premier domestic knockout tournament. The competition structure is designed to integrate clubs from across the professional hierarchy, starting with a preliminary round that features four teams from Serie C and four from Serie B. As the tournament progresses, the field narrows through a series of single-leg knockout stages, eventually leading to the high-pressure, two-legged semi-finals.
The tournament's seeding system provides a significant advantage to the elite. In the round of 16, the eight winners from the second round are joined by the top-seeded Serie A clubs. These seeds, ranked 1–8, are determined by the previous season's standings, specifically the 2025–26 Serie A rankings. This includes the defending champions, Inter Milan, who entered the tournament as the holders after securing their tenth title with a 2–0 victory over Lazio in the previous final.
Navigating the bracket requires surviving several distinct phases. The first round expands the field to 32 teams, bringing in the remaining 16 Serie B clubs and 12 Serie A clubs seeded 9–20. Following the second round, the competition moves into the quarter-finals, which are played as one-legged matches. The intensity peaks in the semi-finals, where the format shifts to a two-legged aggregate battle, before the two remaining survivors meet in a single-match final to decide the champion.
