The Packers became the youngest playoff team in modern NFL history
In short: In 2023, the Green Bay Packers achieved a historic milestone by clinching a playoff berth with the youngest roster since the league expanded to 16 games in 1978. This transition marked a definitive era of change, as the team moved on from legendary figures to forge a new identity.
The 2023 season represented a massive structural shift for the Green Bay Packers. On April 26, the New York Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers, removing the quarterback from the roster for the initial time since 2004. Since 2008, Rodgers served as the franchise's primary figure, securing a Super Bowl title and four NFL MVP awards. His departure paved the way for Jordan Love, the first-round pick from the 2020 draft, to lead the team as the primary starter.
The season was defined by a dramatic late-year surge. After struggling to a 3–6 record in the first half, the Packers went 6–2 in their final eight games. This momentum allowed them to secure the final NFC playoff berth as the No.
7 seed. By achieving this, they matched a feat from the 1987 Houston Oilers and 1980 Atlanta Falcons, becoming the youngest squad to reach the playoffs since 1978 with a mean age of 25.2 years. The Packers also made history in the postseason. By defeating the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round, they became the first seventh-seeded team in NFL history to win a playoff game. This victory was particularly significant as it marked the team's first playoff win without either Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers since 1982. The 49ers stopped the Packers' playoff journey in the Divisional round, representing the fifth occasion in 11 years that San Francisco ended their run.
