How Chelsea achieved a historic European sweep under new ownership
In short: In a season of dramatic shifts, Chelsea Football Club achieved something unprecedented. From a mid-season struggle for domestic relevance to becoming the first club to win all five major European competitions, the 2024–25 campaign was a masterclass in navigating high-stakes transitions.
The 2024–25 season, Chelsea's 119th in history, was defined by a pursuit of silverware under the BlueCo ownership era. After appointing former Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca on 1 July 2024, the club faced an inconsistent domestic campaign. While early brilliance from Cole Palmer—including a four-goal first half against Brighton and Hove Albion—earned him the Premier League Player of the Month for September, a post-Boxing Day slump against Fulham derailed their title ambitions. By beating Nottingham Forest on 25 May 2025, the team clinched fourth position, ensuring their Champions League return after the 2022–23 campaign.
Despite domestic volatility, Chelsea's continental performance was historic. The club navigated the UEFA Conference League, defeating Servette in the play-off qualification round and progressing through a group containing Flamengo and Espérance de Tunis. The campaign culminated in a 4–1 victory over Real Betis in the final on 28 May 2025. Beyond the silverware, this win was vital as it established Chelsea as the sole side to have triumphed in all five primary European tournaments.
The club's success extended to the global stage in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. Following a 2–0 victory over Fluminense on 8 July 2025, Chelsea reached the final, where they defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3–0. Key contributors included new signing João Pedro, who scored twice in the semi-final, and Palmer, who earned the Golden Ball for his tournament performance. Even the club's visual identity saw change, as they announced a partnership with Dubai-based DAMAC on 30 April 2025 to feature on their match shirts.
