A historic collapse: Manchester United's 2024–25 season marks a modern low
In short: For a club defined by prestige, the 2024–25 campaign was a staggering regression. From managerial upheavals to finishing in their lowest league position since 1989–90, the Red Devils faced a winter of unprecedented struggle that left even their own head coach questioning the squad's legacy.
The season was defined by instability and poor results. After Erik ten Hag was dismissed in October following a lackluster start, Rúben Amorim took over as head coach on November 11. Despite this leadership change, the club struggled to find consistency, eventually finishing 15th in the Premier League with just 42 points. This marked their lowest league standing since the 1989–90 season and represented the fewest points earned in a top-flight campaign since they were last relegated in 1973–74.
On the pitch, the defense was frequently porous. The club suffered several heavy home defeats, including a 3–0 loss to Bournemouth for the second consecutive year and a 3–2 defeat against Nottingham Forest—the first time the latter had beaten United at Old Trafford since December 1994. In domestic cup competitions, their run ended early: they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fifth round by Fulham and exited the EFL Cup in the quarter-finals following a 4–3 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
The international stage offered little relief. United reached the UEFA Europa League final but fell 1–0 to Tottenham at the San Mamés Stadium, resulting in their first failure to qualify for European competition since the 2013–14 season. By January 2025, following a 3–1 loss to Brighton & Albion, Amorim described the squad as potentially the weakest in the club's history, with the team sitting in 13th place just ten points above the relegation zone.
