A season of extremes: From record-low points to European glory
In short: The 2024–25 Tottenham Hotspur campaign was a study in sporting contradictions. While the club endured its worst domestic showing in nearly half a century, it simultaneously secured its first major trophy in 17 years. It was a season defined by a dramatic divide between league struggle and continental triumph.
During this period, Tottenham reached their 143rd anniversary while competing in the English football first division for a 47th straight year. However, domestic results were historically poor. The club finished 17th in the Premier League with only 38 points, marking their lowest finish since the 1976–77 season. This tally also set a new record for the fewest points ever earned in the Premier League era, surpassing the previous low established during the 1997–98 season.
Despite these struggles, Spurs achieved significant success on the European stage. On May 21, 2025, they defeated Manchester United 1–0 to win the UEFA Europa League at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao. The winning goal was scored by Brennan Johnson in the 42nd minute after a cross from Pape Matar Sarr deflected off Luke Shaw. This victory secured Spurs' first European title in 41 years and their first major trophy since the 2008 League Cup.
The disparity between these two outcomes led to significant scrutiny of the club's management. Manager Ange Postecoglou was eventually sacked on June 6, 2025, with the club citing the team's poor Premier League performance as a primary factor for the change. While the Europa League win qualified them for the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League, the domestic campaign left them just one place above the relegation zone, narrowly avoiding the fate of Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton.
