The defensive wall that secured the Chargers' best year since 2018
In short: In 2024, the Los Angeles Chargers transformed from a struggling squad into a defensive powerhouse. By allowing the fewest points in the league, they secured their first playoff berth in two years, marking a significant turnaround under new leadership and a shift in team identity.
The 2024 season represented a major structural shift for the Chargers, marking their first year under head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz. This era began with a sense of redemption, as the team avenged a lopsided 63–21 loss to the Raiders from the previous season in their opener. The team also navigated a significant roster transition, notably trading wide receiver Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears on March 14, leaving Joey Bosa and Denzel Perryman as the final remaining players from the franchise's San Diego era.
The team's identity was defined by a dominant defense that allowed only 301 points across the season, the lowest total in the NFL. This defensive success fueled a .647 winning percentage, the club's best since 2018. Notable moments marked the year, such as triumphs against the Saints and Panthers for the initial time post-2004, plus a Denver-based win over the Broncos first seen since 2018.
The road to the playoffs was marked by rare statistical anomalies and high-stakes drama. In Week 15, the team kicked a "free kick" field goal, a feat not accomplished by the franchise in 48 years. A Week 17 victory against the New England Patriots secured a wild card berth, yet the team struggled during the playoffs. In their first-ever playoff meeting against the Houston Texans, quarterback Justin Herbert threw four interceptions—a number exceeding his total for the entire regular season—resulting in a 32–12 loss.
