How Real Madrid secured their second UEFA Youth League title
In short: In a tense final that defied the standard ninety minutes, Real Madrid emerged victorious. After a 1–1 draw against Club Brugge, the Spanish giants relied on a clinical penalty shootout to claim their second trophy, marking a significant milestone in this prestigious European youth competition.
The 2025–26 UEFA Youth League represents the twelfth season of this premier European club competition for young athletes. The tournament structure is complex, split into two distinct sections: the UEFA Champions League Path and the Domestic Champions Path. The Champions League Path features the youth squads of the 36 clubs participating in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League league phase. Meanwhile, the Domestic Champions Path includes youth domestic champions from across the continent, though 5 teams are excluded from this route.
The path to the final is highly selective. From the Champions League Path, the top 22 teams advance to the knockout phase. These teams join the 10 winners from the Domestic Champions Path to form a 32-team knockout bracket. In the Domestic Champions Path, the competition is tiered by association rank; clubs from the top 30 associations, based on 2025 UEFA country coefficients, receive a bye directly to the second round, while the remaining 20 teams must begin in the first round.
The tournament's progression is tightly scheduled throughout the 2025–26 season. Following a series of home-and-away ties in the Domestic Champions Path throughout September, October, and November 2025, the competition moves into a single-leg knockout format. This includes the round of 32, which was drawn on 12 December 2025, and subsequent rounds leading to the final. The season concludes on 20 April 2026, with the championship match held at the Stade de la Tuilière in Lausanne.
