In short: The 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup marks more than just a tournament; it is the start of a significant era for Chinese football. As the first of three consecutive championships to be held in the nation, this competition sets the stage for a decade of continental talent.

Announced on 24 May 2024, the 2025 edition of this biennial championship represents the 42nd iteration of the tournament, which includes the histories of the AFC Youth and U-19 Championships. China's role as host is part of a larger strategic commitment, as the nation is scheduled to host the tournament again in 2027 and 2029, making this the first of three consecutive hosting duties.

The competition, held across four venues in Shenzhen, featured 16 national teams. To ensure a high level of play, the tournament restricted eligibility to players born between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2009. This specific age bracket allowed the top four finishers to secure their places as Asian representatives in the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Technological advancement also marked this tournament, as it introduced Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the first time, specifically from the semi-final stage onwards. The tournament's structure was rigorous, utilizing a complex tie-breaking system involving head-to-head results, goal differences, and even disciplinary points—where yellow and red cards were weighted to determine rankings.

The action was high-scoring, with 93 goals recorded across 31 matches, averaging exactly 3 goals per game. While Uzbekistan entered as the defending champions from 2023, their run ended in the quarter-finals following a penalty shootout loss to South Korea. Meanwhile, Australia achieved a milestone by winning their first major youth title since joining the AFC, defeating three-time champions Saudi Arabia in a penalty shootout.
