A Promising Start Collapses into a Challenging Season for South Carolina Football
In short: The 2025 South Carolina Gamecocks began their season with high expectations, securing a preseason ranking for the first time in over a decade. After an impressive opening victory against Virginia Tech, the team climbed into the national top ten. Yet, a sudden mid-season slump quickly derailed their momentum and postseason hopes.
Under the guidance of head coach Shane Beamer, who entered his fifth year at the helm, the program aimed to build on its recent trajectory. The team hosted opponents at Williams–Brice Stadium in Columbia, drawing an average crowd of 79,334 spectators, which ranked 14th among all college football programs. Early success against Virginia Tech propelled the Gamecocks into the AP poll's top ten, marking their highest standing since 2014. However, this early optimism proved fleeting as the squad struggled to maintain consistency.
Following a strong 2–0 start, the team endured a difficult stretch, dropping seven of their subsequent eight contests. This decline pushed them out of the top 25 rankings and ensured a losing record for the season. The campaign was also marked by off-field tension, most notably during a matchup against Texas A&M. The game became infamous for a sideline incident involving a police officer who harassed South Carolina players, adding a layer of controversy to an already turbulent second half where the team surrendered a lead in dramatic fashion.
Despite the team's collective struggles, individual talent remained a focal point for professional scouts. By the January 15, 2025, deadline, several players declared for the NFL draft. Ultimately, five Gamecocks were selected during the April event. The draft class included safety Nick Emmanwori, who went 35th overall to the Seattle Seahawks, and defensive tackle T. J. Sanders, chosen 41st by the Buffalo Bills. Linebacker Demetrius Knight joined the Cincinnati Bengals at pick 49, while safety Kyle Kennard and defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway were selected in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively.
