The 36th chapter of Croatia's top-flight football odyssey begins
In short: In 2026, the Croatian Football League enters its 36th season of elite competition. While the league's identity shifts with sponsors, the core structure remains a grueling marathon of home-and-away fixtures, testing the endurance of clubs seeking to cement their place in the national hierarchy.
The 2026–27 season, officially known as the SuperSport Hrvatska nogometna liga due to sponsorship, marks a significant milestone in the history of Croatian football. Since its inception in 1992, the league has served as the primary stage for the nation's men's association football teams, evolving through three decades of competition. The current cycle features a dynamic shift in the league's composition. This league represents the premier national championship for men's association football in the country.
NK Rudeš returns to the top flight after a two-year absence, having secured promotion from the 2025–26 Prva NL. Conversely, HNK Vukovar 1991 faces a swift exit, relegated back to the Prva NL after spending only a single season in the top division. The promotion of NK Rudeš followed their success in the 2025–26 Prva NL.
These movements highlight the volatile nature of the league's promotion and relegation system. The competition follows a rigorous format designed to ensure maximum parity and exposure. Each of the competing teams is scheduled to play every other opponent twice, resulting in a total of 36 matches per club. This structure demands sustained consistency from the rosters, as every point contributes to the final standings of the national championship. The season officially kicked off on July 31, 2026, setting the stage for a year of high-stakes rivalry and athletic pursuit. The league's official title reflects its current sponsorship agreement.
