The 142nd edition of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition
In short: As the 2026–27 Scottish Cup approaches, the stage is set for a massive tournament. From amateur winners making their debut to the giants of the Scottish Premiership, every tier of the footballing pyramid prepares for a chance at glory at Hampden Park.
The 2026–27 Scottish Cup, currently known as the Scottish Gas Men's Scottish Cup due to sponsorship, represents the 142nd season of the nation's premier knockout tournament. The competition follows a rigorous structure that integrates various levels of the Scottish football pyramid. The journey begins in the preliminary rounds, where non-licensed clubs like Stonehaven, Shortlees Amateurs, and Dundee North End enter to face licensed sides. This early stage allows smaller clubs, such as Whitletts Victoria and Stonehaven, to make their tournament debuts.
As the tournament progresses, the stakes and the caliber of competition rise predictably. The first round introduces 18 clubs from the Highland Football League and 32 from the Lowland Football League, alongside the winners from the preliminary stages. Ten Scottish League Two sides join the competition during the second round, while ten clubs from both Scottish League One and the Scottish Championship enter at the third stage. The elite 12 clubs of the Scottish Premiership do not enter until the fourth round, scheduled for 16 January 2027.
The road to the final is a grueling test of endurance and skill. After the fourth round, the tournament moves through the fifth round on 6 February 2027, into the quarterfinals on 6 March 2027, and the semi-finals in mid-April 2027. The culmination of the season will occur on 22 May 2027 at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Celtic enter the season as the defending champions, having secured the title in the 2026 final against Dunfermline Athletic.
Broadcasting rights for the tournament are split between Premier Sports and BBC Scotland. Premier Sports holds significant coverage, including the first pick of several key rounds and the final, while BBC Scotland provides coverage from the first round onwards, ensuring the tournament reaches a wide audience across the UK.
