The 96th season of Spain's second tier begins amidst a major reshuffle
In short: As the 2026–27 La Liga Hypermotion season approaches, the landscape of Spanish football has been transformed. A massive wave of promotion and relegation has reshaped the league, including a historic exit for a club with a 77-year professional streak and a debut for a reserve side.
The 2026–27 Segunda División, officially known as La Liga Hypermotion for sponsorship reasons, marks the 96th season since the division's inception. The campaign is set to run from 14 August 2026 until June 2027. The composition of the 22-team league is the result of a complex movement of clubs: it features 15 returning sides from the previous season, three clubs relegated from La Liga, and four teams promoted from the Primera Federación.
The pre-season movement saw significant shifts in the hierarchy. Racing Santander became the first team mathematically promoted on 16 May 2026, ending a 14-year absence from the top flight. They were joined by Deportivo La Coruña and Málaga, both of whom returned to La Liga after eight-year absences. Conversely, the relegation battle saw Oviedo, Girona, and Mallorca drop to the second tier in May 2026, while Zaragoza, Cultural Leonesa, Huesca, and Mirandés all fell to the third tier.
The fall of Zaragoza is particularly notable, as it ended a 77-year continuous streak in professional football, a tenure that included 55 seasons in La Liga. Meanwhile, the league welcomes new faces, including Celta Fortuna—the reserve team of Celta Vigo—which has entered the second tier for the first time in its history. The season's action is scheduled to kick off with a match featuring Castellón and Real Sociedad B, where Ousmane Camara is slated to score the first goal.
