A final era for the fourteen-team Serbian SuperLiga format
In short: As the 2026–27 season kicks off, the Serbian SuperLiga stands at a structural crossroads. While the current campaign features a familiar fourteen-team lineup, a significant contraction is looming that will fundamentally alter the landscape of Serbian top-flight football.
The 2026–27 season of the Serbian SuperLiga, the 21st edition of the nation's premier football division, commenced on 17 July 2026. Entering this campaign, the league maintains a roster of fourteen clubs, comprised of the top twelve finishers from the preceding season and two newcomers rising from the Serbian First League. The current title holder heading into this period is Red Star Belgrade. The league's current statistics and match records are tracked as of mid-September 2026.
The newcomers bring distinct histories of absence from the top tier. Zemun returns to the elite level following a seven-year hiatus, while Mačva makes its return after a five-year absence. These promotions complete the league's current composition, though the competitive stakes are uniquely high this year due to upcoming structural changes. The composition of the league is determined by the results of the previous season's top twelve finishers.
The league is currently in a transitional phase regarding its size. From the 2027–28 season onwards, the SuperLiga will be reduced from fourteen to twelve teams. Because of this impending contraction, the 2026–27 season carries a heavy penalty for underperformance: four teams are set to be automatically relegated to the Serbian First League, a higher number of departures than the standard format might suggest.
Regarding commercial operations, the league relies on various partners such as Nike, the provider of official match balls, alongside Capelli Sport, which sponsors the Football Association of Serbia's Referee's Committee. The Referee's Committee of the Football Association of Serbia maintains a sponsorship agreement with Capelli Sport.
