Can the New York Jets break a decade of losing seasons?
In short: After a dismal 3–14 campaign in 2025, the New York Jets entered 2026 facing a mountain of historical droughts. With a 15-year playoff absence and a 23-year wait for a division title, the pressure is on for Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn.
The 2026 season represents a pivotal moment for the Jets franchise, marking their 57th year in the NFL and their 67th season overall. The team entered the campaign under the leadership of general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn, entering their second year together. The primary objective was to reverse a devastating trend: the club was attempting to snap a streak of 10 consecutive losing seasons following a 3–14 finish in 2025.
The season began with a moment of unexpected triumph. The Jets secured a 23–10 road victory against the Tennessee Titans, a team led by their former head coach, Robert Saleh. This win marked the team's first season opener victory since 2023. Interestingly, the day also saw the New York Giants upset the Cowboys, marking the first time since 2009 that both New York professional teams won their respective opening games.
However, the early momentum proved fragile. Despite holding a 17–7 lead in a home game against the Green Bay Packers, the Jets surrendered 14 unanswered points. A game-winning field goal by Trey Smack sealed the loss, extending the Jets' struggle to beat the Packers at home, a feat they have not achieved since 2002. This result prevented a 2–0 start that would have been their first since 2015, dropping them to 1–1. The downward trend continued with a road loss to the Lions—their first such defeat in Detroit since 1997—leaving the team with a 1–2 record.
