From child star to award-winning director: the evolution of Adinath Kothare
In short: He began his career at just ten years old, playing a kidnapped boy in a Marathi drama. Decades later, the boy from the Kothare film dynasty has transformed into a National Award-winning director and a versatile powerhouse of Indian cinema.
Born in Mumbai on 13 May 1984, Adinath Kothare was immersed in cinema from birth. The son of renowned filmmaker Mahesh Kothare, he made his screen debut in 1994 in the film Majha Chakula. His performance as a mischievous boy earned him the Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Child Actor, marking the start of a career spanning decades of Marathi and Hindi productions.
Kothare's trajectory is defined by a transition from supporting roles and lead acting to sophisticated directing. While he gained recognition for various characters—ranging from a ventriloquist in the 3D film Zapatlela 2 (2013) to the cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar in the Hindi film 83 (2021)—his most significant critical milestone came behind the camera. His directorial debut, Paani, was a survival drama based on the true story of Hanumant Kendre. The production received significant praise, securing the 66th National Film Awards' prize for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation.
Beyond acting, Kothare has expanded his influence through Kothare Vision, a production company he established with his father in 2008. The company has produced significant television milestones, such as the record-breaking mythological series Jai Malhar. Despite the complexities of a high-profile personal life, including a long-standing marriage to actress Urmasia Kanetkar that ended in a joint announcement of separation in July 2026, Kothare remains a central figure in the industry, recently appearing in series like Crime Beat (2025).
