A rare cinematic do-over: how a failed film remake became a box office success
In short: When producers scrapped an entire finished film due to creative differences, the result was an unprecedented reset in Tamil cinema history. By retaining only the lead actor and composer, the team behind Adithya Varma successfully pivoted from a rejected project to a critically acclaimed debut for newcomer Dhruv Vikram.
The 2019 film Adithya Varma is a remake of the 2017 Telugu drama Arjun Reddy. Initially, the project was filmed under the title Varmaa between March and September 2018, directed by Bala. However, in February 2019, producer Mukesh Mehta of E4 Entertainment made the rare decision to scrap the entire finished production, citing dissatisfaction with the final cut. This marked the first instance in Tamil cinema history where a producer refused to release a completed film due to creative disagreements.
The production was relaunched with a new director, Gireesaaya, and a revised crew, though lead actor Dhruv Vikram and composer Radhan were retained. Filming for the new version began in March 2019 and wrapped by July. The narrative follows a brilliant but self-destructive surgeon struggling with anger management and substance abuse after a forced separation from his girlfriend. The film explores his professional downfall, his eventual reconciliation with his family, and his reunion with his partner.
Upon its release in November 2019, the film received positive reviews, particularly for Dhruv Vikram’s performance, which earned him the Best Debut Actor award at the 13th Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards. Critics noted the film’s faithful adaptation of the original, with some praising the dynamic editing by Vivek Harshan and the neutral cinematography by Ravi K. Chandran. Despite its controversial subject matter and an A-rating from the Central Board of Film Certification, the film became a successful venture, opening in 350 screens worldwide and generating significant pre-release business.
The transition from the rejected Varmaa to the successful Adithya Varma highlights the high-stakes nature of film production. While the original teaser for Varmaa faced widespread ridicule, the marketing for the second attempt was better received. By the time of its television premiere in January 2020, the film had solidified its place as a notable entry in Tamil cinema, proving that a complete creative overhaul could effectively salvage a project’s potential.
