The Italian politician who attempted to revive the ghosts of the fascist era
In short: From prison sentences to directing transnational magazines, Adriano Tilgher’s political career is a complex study of neo-fascist fragmentation. Discover how a man born in Taranto spent decades navigating the shifting, often volatile, landscape of Italy's far-right movements.
Born on 1 October 1947 in Taranto, Adriano Tilgher emerged as a significant, if often peripheral, figure in Italy's neo-fascist landscape. His early political identity was forged through associations with groups like National Vanguard, an organization he attempted to refound in 1970. His ambitions were not without legal consequences; Tilgher faced a prison sentence following an attempt to reconstitute the National Fascist Party.
Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Tilgher’s influence moved between journalism and party leadership. In Rome, he directed the magazine Confidentiel, a publication originally established in Paris in 1979 by Stefano Delle Chiaie. In 1987, he moved into party formation by founding the National Popular League, which later became the National Popular Alternative. Despite these efforts, his independent political movements struggled to gain significant electoral traction and were ultimately short-lived.
Tilgher's career is marked by a pattern of splintering and realignment. After 1994, he co-authored 'Un meccanismo diabolico' with Delle Chiaie, a book alleging persecution by the Italian judiciary. By 1996, he had joined the Tricolour Flame, only to be expelled in 1997 following disputes with leader Pino Rauti. This led to the creation of the National Front, a party named after the French Front National, which Tilgher attempted to bolster by inviting Jean-Marie Le Pen to Rome during the 1997 elections.
The later stages of his career saw him participating in broader coalitions, such as the Social Alternative group led by Alessandra Mussolini, which dissolved following the 2006 general election. By 2008, Tilgher had aligned himself with The Right (La Destra), continuing a long-standing involvement in the fragmented ecosystem of the Italian far-right.
