How a 1994 merger created a Cypriot football powerhouse
In short: AEK Larnaca was born from the union of two historic rivals, EPA Larnaca and Pezoporikos. This strategic merger aimed to build a multi-sport club capable of competing across various disciplines without facing financial instability, eventually leading the club to historic European successes.
The modern identity of AEK Larnaca was forged on 18 July 1994, following a merger between two established Larnaca clubs: EPA Larnaca and Pezoporikos. This decision was driven by a desire to create a robust sports organization that could compete in football, basketball, volleyball, and futsal without the burden of financial problems. Before the merger, the clubs had a complex relationship; for instance, in 1932, they had merged to form EPA Larnaca, but a group of members and players left in 1937 to refound Pezoporikos.
The club's heritage is deeply rooted in the ancient history of Cyprus. The name AEK is derived from the ancient Greek city of Kition, which once stood on the site of modern-day Larnaca. The club's emblem honors Admiral Kimon, who died defending Kition against the Persians circa 450 BC. His legacy is captured in the phrase "Even in death he was victorious."
On the pitch, AEK has become a significant force in Cypriot and European football. The club has achieved several historic milestones, including qualifying for the UEFA Europa League group stages in the 2011–12 and 2022–23 seasons. Notably, they were the first Cypriot club to reach the Round of 16 in the Europa Conference League, becoming the second Cypriot side to reach the Round of 16 in any European competition. Their successes include winning the Cypriot Cup in 2004, 2018, and 2025, and making their Champions League debut in 2022.
