How a Japanese safari park became the world leader in giant panda breeding
In short: In the town of Shirahama, a massive zoo and aquarium complex has achieved a global milestone. While many facilities struggle with conservation, this park has mastered the delicate art of panda reproduction, establishing itself as a vital international hub for one of the world's most iconic species.
Originally launched on 22 April 1978 under the name Nanki Shirahama World Safari, Adventure World now functions as a diverse complex featuring an aquarium, zoo, and theme park. Serving as China's Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base's Japanese division, the park's entire panda population, including all young, belongs to that Chinese institution.
The park's success in panda conservation is statistically significant. Up until September 2018, 17 pandas had been born at the site, marking a record for live births and surviving young kept beyond mainland China. This achievement is part of a broader regional landscape; as of September 12, 2018, Adventure World held six of the ten captive pandas in Japan, while Ueno Zoo and Kobe Oji Zoo held three and one, respectively.
Beyond pandas, the park manages a complex ecosystem of species. Its 'Marine Live' show utilizes a massive tank holding 10,000,000 litres, while its penguin exhibits feature eight different species, including emperor and king penguins. The park even serves a civic role, with pandas like Saihama and Ayahama serving as ambassadors for Wakayama's traffic safety campaigns.
However, managing such a diverse collection presents modern challenges. In January 2023, the park faced a crisis when two lions died from COVID-19 following contact with an infected employee, though eight other lions survived the infection. The park also continues the legacy of its marine programs, having preserved eggs and sperm from deceased orcas like Goro to prepare for future artificial insemination.
