The AFC East: A powerhouse division defined by perfection and historic rivalries
In short: Since its 1960 inception, the AFC East has been a cornerstone of professional football. Home to the only perfect season in history and a collection of legendary franchises, this division has shaped the landscape of the league through intense rivalries and unparalleled championship success.
Established in 1960 during the inaugural season of the American Football League (AFL), the AFC East is one of the NFL's oldest divisions. The initial grouping comprised the Houston Oilers, New York Titans, Boston Patriots, and Buffalo Bills. Following the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the division was absorbed nearly intact, though the Oilers were moved to the AFC Central and replaced by the Baltimore Colts. The Colts remained in the division until the 2002 realignment moved them to the AFC South. The original lineup featured the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Oilers. The New York Titans and Boston Patriots were also part of this founding group. These teams formed the division's core during the AFL's first year. This structure remained largely unchanged after the merger.
The division is synonymous with elite performance. It holds the distinction of hosting both perfect regular seasons in professional football history: the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who achieved a 17–0 record, and the 2007 New England Patriots, who finished 18–1. While the Patriots lost Super Bowl XLII, their dominance is reflected in their six Super Bowl titles, contributing to the division's total of nine championships among its current members.
Current divisional supremacy is held by the New England Patriots, who achieved an extraordinary run of eleven consecutive division titles between 2009 and 2019. The division's historical weight is significant; since 1960, its teams have appeared in 22 Super Bowls and secured 11 victories. The current quartet—the Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, and Jets—continues to maintain deep-seated rivalries that trace back to their shared AFL origins in the 1960s.
