In short: Since its 2002 inception, the AFC South has been a landscape of shifting identities and historic transitions. While its members have claimed numerous division titles, the division currently faces a striking paradox: a persistent inability to secure a championship victory in the modern era.

Formed during the 2002 NFL realignment following the league's expansion to 32 teams, the AFC South was composed of a unique mix: an expansion franchise, a team from the AFC East, and two from the AFC Central. At its birth, no member had spent more than eighteen seasons in their current city. The Indianapolis Colts had moved from Baltimore at the end of 1983, the Tennessee Titans (formerly the Houston Oilers) transitioned in 1996, and the Jacksonville Jaguars were a relatively young addition, having started play in 1995.

Despite this fresh start, the division's history is marked by heavyweights and droughts. The Colts achieved significant success, including a Super Bowl XLI victory in 2006, which remains the division's only Super Bowl win to date. However, since that win, the AFC South has endured the longest active Super Bowl victory drought in the league. While the other seven NFL divisions have each secured at least one championship in the eighteen seasons following 200 and 2009, the AFC South has waited.

The division's competitive landscape is also defined by extremes. The Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars are the only two teams in the division that have never appeared in a Super Bowl. Conversely, the division is unique in the NFL for a different reason: it is the only one where every member team has hosted a Super Bowl in their home stadium. This mix of championship-winning pedigree and championship-less struggle makes the AFC South a statistical anomaly in professional football.
