The K-pop group that treated its members like students
In short: In the high-stakes world of South Korean idols, most groups aim for permanence. But After School operated on a unique cycle of admissions and graduations, allowing members to depart for solo careers while new talent joined the ranks, fundamentally reshaping the group's identity over several years.
Formed by Pledis Entertainment, After School debuted in January 2009 with the single album 'New Schoolgirl'. The group's foundational concept was built around a revolving door of talent, where members would 'graduate' to pursue individual paths in acting or solo music, and new members would be 'admitted' to the lineup. This cycle was driven by the vision of Kahi, who, after leaving the group S-Blush, collaborated with the CEO of Pledis to produce the group alongside trainee Bekah.
The group's lineup was famously fluid. Early members like Soyoung departed in late 2009 to pursue acting, replaced by Raina and Nana. The group's musical identity also shifted through these transitions; while early tracks like 'Ah!' were influenced by the Pussycat Dolls, later hits like 'Bang!' adopted a marching band concept inspired by the film 'Drumline'. This era saw the group even forming sub-units, such as the more lighthearted Orange Caramel in 2010, and splitting into two distinct teams, A.S. Red and A.S. Blue, in 2011.
Beyond the lineup changes, After School was noted for its technical performance style, incorporating tap dancing, drums, and pole dancing. Their influence extended to Japan, where they signed with Avex Trax in 2011 and collaborated with superstar Namie Amuro. Despite the constant evolution, the group maintained a significant presence, ranking fifth on Billboard's 2017 list of the top K-pop girl groups of the decade. By 2015, promotions for both After School and Orange Caramel had ceased, with members eventually moving into separate professional lives.
