In short: For decades, Saudi football was dominated by the powerhouses of Riyadh and Jeddah. Then came Al-Fateh. In just four years of top-flight play, this regional club pulled off one of the greatest shocks in the nation's history, proving that elite success could exist outside the traditional urban centers.

Al-Fateh SC, based in Al-Mubarraz, Al-Ahsa, spent much of its history in the lower divisions. This stood in stark contrast to their neighbors, Hajer FC, who achieved multiple promotions in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. The turning point for Al-Fateh arrived in the 2008–09 season when they hired Tunisian head coach Fathi Al-Jabal. The team achieved a historic first promotion to the Saudi Professional League after finishing second in the Saudi First Division League during his tenure.

The side's rise occurred with impressive speed. After staying up in their debut top-flight season, they aggressively built a squad featuring homegrown talents like Hamdan Al-Hamdan and Mohammed Al-Fuhaid, alongside high-profile signings like Congolese forward Doris Fuakumputu and former Al-Nassr midfielder Élton. This investment culminated on April 14, 2013, when Al-Fateh won their first League title with two games to spare following a 1–0 victory over Al-Ahli. It was the first time a club outside of Riyadh or Jeddah had won the Pro League since the 1986–87 season.

The club's momentum continued into the inaugural Saudi Super Cup, where Élton scored a dramatic winning goal in the 111th minute to defeat Al-Ittihad 3–2. While their 2014 AFC Champions League debut was disappointing—finishing with zero wins—the club remained a competitive force. They notably secured a spot in the 2017 AFC Champions League group stage after navigating a complex licensing situation that saw them bypass the qualifying play-offs, eventually defeating Nasaf Qarshi 1–0 to advance.

Al-Fateh's story is a masterclass in rapid institutional scaling. By combining local talent with strategic international recruitment, they broke a nearly three-decade geographic monopoly, redefining the landscape of Saudi professional sports.
