The rare feat of winning back-to-back titles with one starting lineup
In short: In 2007, the Florida Gators achieved a basketball milestone that had not been seen in over 15 years. They didn't just win two consecutive national championships; they did so without changing a single starter, defying the typical cycle of roster turnover and rebuilding.
Al Horford was a cornerstone of this historic run at the University of Florida. During the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons, he served as the starting center for teams that swept through the NCAA tournament to secure back-to-back titles. This feat made them the first program to repeat as national champions since the 1991–92 Duke Blue Devils. Notably, they were also the first team in history to accomplish this specific double without replacing any of their five starting players.
Horford's journey to these championships was marked by high-stakes reliability. In a pivotal moment during his junior year, coach Billy Donovan famously benched him due to injury concerns before a game against third-ranked Ohio State. However, Horford entered the game from the bench to guard star freshman Greg Oden, recording 11 points and 11 rebounds in limited action. This resilience paved the way for a 2007 victory where he helped lead the Gators to an 84–75 win over the Buckeyes.
Following his collegiate success, Horford became a high-profile NBA prospect, selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2007. He quickly established himself as a premier talent, becoming the only player unanimously chosen for the NBA All-Rookie First Team that year. His career has since been defined by versatility and longevity, spanning multiple teams including the Celtics and Thunder, eventually culminating in his first NBA championship title in 2024.
