In short: In 1960, a group of local residents in Zabeel pooled just 10 Dirhams each to found a club in a small rented house. Today, Al Wasl stands as a titan of Emirati football, boasting eight league titles and a legacy that once captivated the world through the coaching of Diego Maradona.

The club's origins are rooted in the community of Zabeel. Originally founded in 1960 under the name Al-Zamalek, the early members relied on modest contributions to sustain their operations. During this era, the club saw the participation of notable figures like His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who played as a defender. The club's early competitive years included significant victories against regional rivals and even a 6–1 win against Ras Al Khaimah.

A pivotal transformation occurred in 1974 following a merger between Al Shoula and Al Orouba. This period saw the club adopt its current identity, Al Wasl—meaning 'connection'—and its signature yellow colors. This era of restructuring paved the way for a 'golden age' in the 1980s. During this decade, the club secured five league titles and inaugurated the Zabeel Stadium, which has since seen capacity expansions reaching 25,000.

Al Wasl's history is marked by both extreme dominance and periods of transition. The club was named the UAE's Club of the Century due to its unprecedented success and international performance. While the 1990s brought challenges, including the cancellation of the 1990–91 season due to the Gulf War, the club remained a powerhouse. Most recently, the 2023–24 season saw them claim their eighth UAE Pro League title, proving their enduring resilience.

The club's international profile peaked in 2011 when football legend Diego Maradona was appointed head coach. Although his tenure was difficult on the pitch, it sparked a massive surge in global shirt sales and cemented the club's status as a legendary name in the sport.
