In short: Al Wahda FC is a modern powerhouse of Emirati football, but its lineage is a complex puzzle of mergers and rebirths. To understand its history is to trace a lineage of four original clubs that were folded and refashioned into the team that stands today.

The story of Al Wahda FC is one of institutional evolution in Abu Dhabi. While the club currently competes in the UAE Pro League and plays at the Al Nahyan Stadium, its roots stretch back much further than its 1984 founding date. The city's football landscape began with the creation of Al-Ahli in 1966, followed by Al-Ittihad in 1968, Al-Falah, and finally Al-Wahda in 1969.

The club's identity underwent a radical transformation in 1974. A government decision by the Minister of Youth and Sport mandated a consolidation of these teams. Al-Ittihad and Al-Wahda were merged to form Abu Dhabi SC, while Al-Ahli and Al-Falah were joined to create Al-Emirates SC. This structural shift effectively erased the original independent identities of the four founding clubs.

The modern iteration of Al Wahda FC was finally established in 1984 through the merger of these two successor entities, Abu Dhabi SC and Al-Emirates SC. Since its rebirth, the club has become a consistent competitor on the continental stage, qualifying for Asian competitions since the late 1990s and appearing in the AFC Champions League multiple times.

The club's success is marked by several league titles, including a maiden victory in 1998–99 where they finished eight points ahead of Al Ain. They have since secured multiple championships, including titles in the 2000–01, 2004–05, 2009–10, 2015–16, 2017–18, and 2023–24 seasons. Their home, the Al Nahyan Stadium, was renovated for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup to accommodate 15,895 supporters.
