How a Macedonian power forward became a tactical cornerstone of international basketball success
In short: Standing at 6 ft 11 in, Pero Antić redefined the power forward role through a rare combination of physical strength and perimeter shooting. From winning back-to-back EuroLeague titles to forcing overtime in the NBA with clutch shots, his career highlights a unique evolution from European star to global professional.
Born in 1982 in Skopje, Pero Antić built a reputation as a versatile big man capable of playing both power forward and center. His professional journey spanned several European leagues, including stints with AEK Athens, Spartak St. Petersburg, and Fenerbahçe. Antić’s tactical value was defined by his ability to stretch the floor; his jump shot and three-point accuracy made him a consistent scoring threat, while his defensive positioning allowed him to neutralize elite opponents like Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol.
Antić’s international career reached its zenith during the 2011 FIBA EuroBasket in Lithuania. As captain, he served as the defensive anchor for the Macedonian national team, leading them to a surprising semi-final appearance. His performance was statistically dominant, ranking among the tournament leaders in rebounds and double-doubles. This period of success earned him an honorary academic title from FON University in Skopje and paved the way for his transition to the NBA.
In 2013, Antić signed with the Atlanta Hawks, where he quickly adapted to the American game. His tenure included a memorable playoff debut against the Indiana Pacers, where his defensive work against Roy Hibbert helped secure an upset victory. Despite a brief legal entanglement in 2015 that was later dropped, Antić remained a resilient figure in the sport. After returning to Europe to play for Crvena zvezda, he eventually transitioned into leadership roles, currently serving as the president of the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia and exploring coaching opportunities in the NBA Summer League.
