From childhood fan to NHL star: The professional journey of Alex Tuch
In short: Born in Syracuse, Alex Tuch grew up cheering for the Buffalo Sabres. His path to the NHL took him through the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and Boston College before he became a professional power forward, eventually returning to his childhood team and later joining the Washington Capitals.
His early promise was evident during his time with Team USA, where he secured a bronze medal at the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and a gold medal at the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championships. Following a two-year stint at Boston College, Tuch turned professional in 2016, initially spending time with the Iowa Wild in the American Hockey League before making his NHL debut for the Minnesota Wild in February 2017.
The trajectory of Tuch's career shifted significantly when he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017. He became a key contributor during their inaugural run to the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. In 2021, Tuch was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, the team he supported as a youth. His tenure in Buffalo was marked by significant offensive growth, including a career-best 2022–23 season where he recorded two hat-tricks while playing alongside Tage Thompson and Jeff Skinner. He quickly became a fan favorite, notably sealing a victory against his former team by stripping the puck from Jack Eichel in 2022.
In June 2026, Tuch's career entered a new chapter. After contract negotiations with Buffalo reached an impasse, he finalized a long-term agreement worth $84 million over eight years. This deal was structured as a sign-and-trade, resulting in his move to the Washington Capitals in exchange for David Kämpf and a future draft selection. Beyond the ice, Tuch maintains strong family ties, with his younger brother Luke also pursuing a professional hockey career within the American Hockey League.
