France just rewrote the record books of the NBA draft
In short: In 2024, France achieved a feat never before seen in professional basketball. By placing three players in the top 10 picks of a single NBA draft, they became the first foreign nation to reach this milestone, signaling a seismic shift in global talent scouting.
Alex Sarr's ascent to the NBA is a study in diverse international pathways. Born in Bordeaux and raised in a basketball-centric family of Senegalese descent, Sarr began his journey at age four. His development was non-linear: he spent two seasons with Real Madrid Baloncesto’s youth team in Spain before moving to the United States in 2021. There, he joined Overtime Elite in Atlanta, a specialized league designed to provide professional pathways and a guaranteed minimum salary of $100,000 per year for high-potential prospects.
Before entering the NBA, Sarr tested himself in Australia's NBL with the Perth Wildcats during the 2023–24 season. Despite a hip strain that sidelined him for four weeks, he recorded career highs and helped lead his team to the playoffs. This international seasoning proved vital as he entered the 2024 NBA draft. On June 26, the Washington Wizards selected him second overall, joining Zaccharie Risacher (first overall) and Tidjane Salaün (sixth overall) to create a historic French sweep of the top ten.
Sarr's impact was immediate. By March 15, 2025, he became the youngest player in Wizards history to score over 30 points in a single game, recording 34 points against the Denver Nuggets. His rapid rise earned him an NBA All-Rookie First Team selection and a spot on the senior French national team. While a fractured foot surgery in June 2026 briefly paused his momentum, Sarr has established himself as a cornerstone of both his club and his country's basketball identity.
