From French amateur leagues to the global stage of the World Cup
In short: Most professional footballers follow a predictable path through elite academies. But Allan Nyom’s journey took him from the French reserves to the intense pressure of La Liga and the Premier League, eventually representing Cameroon on the world's biggest footballing stage.
Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on 10 May 1988, Allan-Roméo Nyom’s early career did not feature the polished trajectory of many modern stars. Before making his mark in professional leagues, he competed in the reserves championship with AS Nancy-Lorraine and played for AC Arles-Avignon in the Championnat National.
His professional breakthrough was facilitated by a strategic partnership between Italian club Udinese Calcio and Spanish side Granada CF. After being signed by Udinese in the summer of 2009, Nyom was immediately loaned to Granada. He became a mainstay in the Andalusia side, appearing in 220 competitive games over six seasons, including four campaigns in La Liga. During his tenure, he helped the club achieve promotion from Segunda División B to the top flight.
Nyom's career eventually spanned several of Europe's most prominent leagues. In July 2015, he moved to the English Premier League with Watford, followed by a transfer to West Bromwich Albion in August 2016. His time in Spain saw further stints with CD Leganés and Getafe, the latter of which involved a complex dispute where West Bromwich Albion sought £2.7 million in compensation from FIFA.
On the international stage, Nyom chose to represent Cameroon, earning his first cap on 11 November 2011, in a victory against Sudan. His career pinnacle arrived in 2014 when manager Volker Finke selected him for the FIFA World Cup squad. Although Cameroon faced a difficult tournament, Nyom made his tournament debut on 23 June 2014 against Brazil, notably providing the cross for Joël Matip’s equalizer.
