The Brazilian defensive specialist who mastered the art of the ball-win
In short: In 2014, one player emerged as the most prolific ball-winner across Europe's top five leagues. Allan Marques, a versatile midfielder with a knack for precision, moved from the Brazilian leagues to the heights of Serie A and the Premier League, proving that defensive dominance is often a quiet, calculated science.
Allan Marques's ascent through professional football began in Brazil, moving from the Madureira youth system to Uruguay's Deportivo Maldonado before returning to Brazil to debut for Vasco da Gama in 2009. His early career was marked by both triumph and physical setbacks, including an injury that sidelined him during the 2010 Copa do Brasil. However, his talent was undeniable; by 2011, he was a key part of the Brazil under-20 side that secured the FIFA U-20 World Cup title.
His move to Italy in 2012 with Udinese established him as a premier talent. Under manager Francesco Guidolin, Allan's ability to recover and distribute the ball helped Udinese secure a surprise fifth-place finish. His performances were so commanding that manager Andrea Stramaccioni later compared his potential to that of Manchester United's Paul Pogba. This defensive prowess peaked during the 2014–15 season, when he was identified as the top ball-winner across Europe's five major leagues.
A €10m transfer to Napoli in 2015 saw him flourish in the Europa League and Serie A, notably providing assists in high-scoring victories against Club Brugge and Lazio. His versatility allowed him to operate as a holding midfielder, a playmaker, or even a full-back. After a stint with Everton in England starting in 2020, where he reunited with coach Carlo Ancelotti, he eventually moved to Al Wahda in the UAE in 2022. Though eligible for Portugal and Italy due to heritage, he earned senior international honors for Brazil, including a 2019 Copa América victory.
