In short: Known as 'The Tank' for his immense physical presence, Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa was a rarity in football. While most centre-backs focus on stopping attacks, this Brazilian star became famous for his devastatingly powerful shots, turning defensive positions into scoring opportunities with terrifying precision.

Born in June 1982, the Brazilian defender Alex built a career defined by physical strength and a lethal striking ability. He earned the nicknames 'The Tank' and 'Canhão da Vila' due to his ability to strike the ball with immense power. This unique skill set made him a threat from distance, a trait he demonstrated throughout his career at Santos, PSV, Chelsea, PSG, and AC Milan.

His journey was marked by significant shifts in fortune. After being signed by Chelsea in 2004, he spent three years on loan at PSV Eindhoven due to work permit issues. During his time in the Netherlands, he secured three Eredivisie titles and became a vital part of a side that reached the Champions League semi-finals. Despite being highly recommended by scouts, he faced competition for a permanent role at Chelsea, where he eventually won the FA Cup and a domestic double in 2010.

Alex's career also saw him navigate the complexities of international and club football. Between 2003 and 2008, he made 18 appearances for Brazil and secured the 2007 Copa América title. After leaving London for Paris Saint-Germain in 2012 for £4.2 million, he secured two Ligue 1 titles. He concluded his professional playing days at AC Milan, eventually announcing his retirement in December 2016.

Whether scoring Chelsea's 1,000th Premier League goal in 2008 or striking decisive free-kicks in France, Alex remained a distinctive figure in modern football—a defender whose offensive potential was as notable as his defensive solidity.
