The Beatles' masterpiece was actually a collaborative debate in a tea break
In short: While Paul McCartney considers 'And I Love Her' his first great solo ballad, the song's middle eight remains a point of contention. Was it a spontaneous Lennon contribution or a McCartney original? The truth lies in a single, productive afternoon during the February 1964 recording sessions.
The creation of 'And I and Love Her' was far from a seamless process. During the February 1964 sessions at Abbey Road, the band struggled with various takes. On Wednesday, 26 February, the group recorded 17 takes between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm. It was during a tea break in this session that the song's structure changed significantly. According to Beatles publisher Dick James, John Lennon suggested a break, after which Lennon and McCartney wrote a 'very constructive' middle eight in just thirty minutes.
However, the authorship of this section is disputed. Lennon claimed in a Playboy interview that his primary contribution was this middle eight. Conversely, McCartney maintains that he wrote the section alone, though he concedes Lennon may have helped. Adding further complexity, McCartney credits George Harrison with composing the song's signature four-note guitar riff, a motif Harrison had previously used in a Beatles arrangement of 'The Honeymoon Song' the previous August.
Musically, the track is sophisticated, shifting between E major and C# minor, with a key change to F before the solo, and concluding with a D major chord—a technique known as a Picardy third resolution. The song's release was also a period of rapid evolution; the initial mono mix, released in the US on 26 June 1964, featured a single-tracked vocal, while a later June mix featured a double-tracked vocal. This versatility allowed the song to reach No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and find life through various covers, including Esther Phillips' 1965 gender-swapped version, 'And I Love Him'.
